Ensenada de los Muertos or Bahia de los Suenos

Today: We jumped into
the warm aqua blue water and swam around the boat…and noticed the sacrificial
zinc on the propeller shaft was completely gone. I set about replacing it for the first time, which
was a bit of work without SCUBA gear. Then Jen spotted that on our boom, in
the bolt that connects it to the gooseneck to the mast, had a broken cotter pin
and was coming loose. Our whole boom
structure was compromised completely! Between
that, which is extremely dangerous, and the mainsheet shackle breaks that we
addressed yesterday, again very dangerous, our boom was about to collapse on
deck if it didn’t have the mainsail raised to hold it up. What caused it? Normal wear and tear? Or were we doing something that was placing
undue load on the rigging hardware?
After
much struggling and muscle, we managed to get the pin back flush through the
gooseneck, but the hole for the cotter pin wasn’t aligned. The a super friendly cruising couple in a
catamaran, Flight Deck, Bill and Katie, came by and introduced themselves. I described the problem and they came onboard
to help.
